Jordan Peterson and the Search for a Meaningful Life Christopher Kaczor Tuesday, September 7, 2021 Jordan Peterson’s work has not only provoked powerful reactions from defenders of woke orthodoxy, but also reconsiderations by atheists, agnostics, and religious “Nones” about the wisdom of Biblical stories. In our book Jordan Peterson, God, and Christianity: The Search for a Meaningful Life, Matthew Petrusek and I seek to show Peterson’s method of reading Scripture is in some ways found earlier – and in a richer form – in figures like Augustine, Gregory the Great, and Thomas Aquinas. Moreover, we argue that the trajectories of many lines of Peterson’s thought find their completion in Catholicism. “Catholicism is as sane as people can get,” Jordan Peterson said in a recent podcast, and we agree. Peterson brings insights from Jungian psychology, Russian literature, evolutionary theory, and the totalitarian tragedies of the 20^th century to illuminate the Biblical text. This method echoes Augustine who taught in De doctrina christiana that all secular wisdom can be used to interpret Scripture because all truths, wherever they are found, ultimately come from God. For Peterson, unknowingly re-presenting the teaching of St. Gregory the Great, the Old Testament is revealed in the New Testament, the New Testament sheds light on the Old Testament. Like Aquinas, Peterson views the Bible as having a rich depth of meaning that goes far beyond what any single interpreter can fathom. Within this framework, Peterson offers striking interpretations of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, the Tower of Babel, and the call of Abraham. For Peterson, these stories are not simply about ancient figures in a forgotten world, but about human realities that remain as relevant today as they were when first written. Part of the power of Peterson’s thought is his direct confrontation with the problem of pain, occasioned no doubt by the excruciating suffering that he and his family have endured. In 12 Rules for Life, he writes that, “Truth is the antidote to suffering.” In Beyond Order, he says the antidote to suffering is some good that constitutes, “the highest possible goal.” Elsewhere he writes, “We cannot live without some connection to the divine – and beauty is divine – because in its absence life is too short, too dismal, and too tragic.” We might summarize Peterson by saying that the antidote to suffering is the truth as courageously articulated, the good of the highest goal, and the beautiful as experienced. In the Catholic tradition, God himself is the true, the good, and the beautiful. Echoing the thought of Diotima in Plato’s Symposium, Augustine teaches that God is “the supreme beauty.” In his Confessions, the African bishop laments, “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you!” *Jordan Peterson Thomas Aquinas argued that God is the highest possible goal, the summum bonum, the perfect good that is sought by those who seek happiness. Unlike dualistic conceptions of ultimate reality, such as “the force” in Star Wars, which has a light side and a dark side, Thomas argued that God is not composed in any way, so cannot be partly good and partly bad.  Thomas reasons that God is the highest good, the perfect good, and a good without any evil whatsoever. And what about the truth? Aquinas defined the truth as a correspondence of mind and reality. By contrast, Peterson has a pragmatic understanding of truth as “the useful,” inspired by figures like William James. That’s helpful, so far as it goes, but Peterson – at least for the moment – and others in the Jungian tradition pursue the benefits of truth without grounding it in the only place it can be fully grounded. In the Summa contra Gentiles, Aquinas provided reasons to believe that God’s mind and God’s reality not only correspond to each other but are actually identical. The Divine Mind is God’s Essence, and God’s Essence is the Divine Mind. Moreover, God is the First Truth because God is the First Cause of all physical and psychological realities that we know when we understand the truth. If the antidote to suffering is truth, goodness, and beauty, then God is the antidote to suffering. The aphorism that “Truth is the antidote to suffering” is connected to the Catholic tradition in yet another way. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This way of Jesus is not merely an intellectual grasp of the truth. This reality, explored so ably by Jesuit Fr. David Vincent Meconi in his wonderful new book Christ Alive in Me: Living as a Member of the Mystical Body, is called by different names such as divinization, theosis, and deification. The Christian claim is that we are invited not just to become eager pupils of an insightful teacher, but we are called to be adopted children in the Divine Family of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. If there is a partial antidote to suffering in this life, it is found in union with Christ who (according to Aquinas) experienced the greatest possible suffering and who offers the greatest possible consolation. This happens not through just knowing the teaching of Jesus, but in sharing the life of Jesus offered to us as a gift. But, in fact, there is no perfect antidote to suffering, at least in this life. Here below, there will always be pain both physical and psychological. Indeed, the greatest of the saints, those who lived in Christ most fully, often grievously suffered. But their suffering had a meaning because their lives had a purpose: to love God and to love neighbor. Love is a balm but not a perfect antidote to the inevitable difficulties of life here below. Christ’s suffering found no perfect antidote until he died and rose from the dead, and our suffering won’t either. Un site alternatif pour le Chemin synodal

Le diocèse de Ratisbonne dont l’évêque est Mgr Rudolf Voderholzer, a lancé un site sur le Chemin synodal, ayant pour titre “Contributions synodales”, destiné à fournir un espace pour les voix indépendantes et critiques quant aux éléments déjà en place du processus outre-Rhin. Et permettre aussi la publication de documents alternatifs opposés aux schémas synodaux officiels.

Mgr Voderholzer, qui n’a jamais caché son opposition au Chemin synodal, présente ce nouveau site en se demandant : « Que doit-il se passer pour que le fait d’être Eglise, d’être catholique, n’apparaisse pas comme une tache dont il faut avoir honte ? »

Il poursuit : « Que pouvons-nous apporter pour que le fait d’être un chrétien redevienne une raison de marcher droit », de rendre gloire à Dieu, et d’être « une contribution importante à la construction et à la cohésion de la société ? »

« Ces objectifs unissent tous les catholiques d’Allemagne. Ces objectifs sous-tendent également le projet de la “Voie synodale” », explique-t-il, mais « nous sommes de plus en plus convaincus qu’elle ne peut pas mener au but dans les sentiers que nous avons suivis jusqu’à présent ».

L’évêque de Ratisbonne remet donc radicalement en cause le processus entamé, et se propose de lui faire pièce par le site qu’il présente : « Sur cette page, vous trouverez, entre autres, des textes alternatifs, des commentaires et des déclarations du Vatican sur les thèmes et les forums du Chemin synodal, dans lesquels nous faisons connaître notre point de vue. »

La suite est intéressante : « Les arguments présentés ici ont été introduits dans le processus du Chemin synodal. Toutefois, en raison de la majorité qui y règne, ils n’ont pas été et ne seront pas pris en compte jusqu’à aujourd’hui. “Nous”, c’est-à-dire les membres de l’Assemblée synodale et des Forums synodaux, qui se sont maintenant réunis en tant que groupe sur ce chemin. »

C’est-à-dire ceux qui estiment que la « saine doctrine » n’a pas été prise en compte et que le Chemin synodal va droit dans le mur. Mgr Voderholzer décrit ensuite le contenu du site : « Les lecteurs sympathisants y trouveront des arguments susceptibles d’approfondir les discussions et, éventuellement, d’aider à se rapprocher de la vérité plus que ne le permettent les votes. »

Le site propose ainsi déjà un document alternatif : « Autorité et responsabilité – Thèses sur la réforme de l’Eglise » pour remplacer le schéma issu du premier forum préparatoire « Pouvoir et répartition des pouvoirs dans l’Eglise – participation conjointe et partage du mandat missionnaire ».

Il faut espérer que cette initiative pourra enrayer le Chemin synodal allemand, dont la poursuite a été sérieusement freinée par la situation sanitaire. Mais les évêques allemands opposés au processus se comptent sur les doigts d’une main.

Médias du Vatican : la communication sous pression

Rien ne va plus entre le pape François et les médias du Vatican, qui semblent avoir perdu l’exclusivité des propos du successeur de Pierre. Dernier accroc en date, l’entretien accordé par le pontife argentin à une radio hispanophone.

Mercredi 1er septembre 2021 : la radio catholique hispanophone COPE diffuse un entretien exclusif avec le pape François réalisé la semaine précédente à la Maison Sainte-Marthe. Quelques jours auparavant, COPE a même divulgué quelques unes des réponses du successeur de Pierre.

Ce n’est qu’après la diffusion de l’émission que Vatican News, le site officiel d’informations du Saint-Siège, publiera le script de l’entretien : un nouveau coup dur pour les médias du Vatican qui se trouvent, une fois de plus, relégués au rôle de simples relais d’une exclusivité qui leur revient de droit.

La tension n’est pas nouvelle : le 24 mai dernier, le pontife argentin, en visite officielle au Palazzo Pio, le saint des saints de la communication papale, avait comparé la « belle organisation » des médias du Vatican à une « montagne accouchant d’une souris ». Andrea Tornielli, directeur éditorial du Dicastère pour la communication, pourtant fidèle soutien du pape, menace de démissionner.

Il faut dire que l’utilisation de circuits parallèles est devenu une seconde nature chez le pape François, qui n’entend pas s’appuyer sur ses propres services pour diffuser sa parole.

Ce qui rend la fonction de communicant assez sportive, dans tous les sens du terme : ainsi le 2 janvier dernier, un employé de Vatican News n’en revient pas de voir son responsable courir au tabac-presse le plus proche, afin d’acheter un exemplaire de la Gazzetta dello Sport, l’équivalent romain de L’Equipe, auquel le pape François venait d’accorder un entretien exclusif.

Mais cette communication dérivée a ses limites, car en se diffusant « sans filet », c’est à dire sans être vérifiée par les services compétents, la secrétairerie d’Etat notamment, la parole du pape risque de tomber au moins dans l’approximation, ou pire, dans l’erreur.

C’est d’ailleurs ce qui est arrivé lors de l’entretien diffusé par COPE le 1er septembre dernier. Interrogé au sujet de la crise afghane, le Saint-Père évoque des propos qu’il attribue à Angela Merkel :

« Il est nécessaire de mettre fin à la politique irresponsable qui consiste à imposer ses propres valeurs aux autres, ainsi qu’aux tentatives de construire la démocratie dans d’autres pays sur la base de modèles importés, sans prendre en compte les notions historiques, ethniques et religieuses, et en ignorant absolument les traditions d’autres nations. »

Et le pape François d’y voir la preuve de la « grande sagesse » de la chancelière allemande. Las ! Quelques heures plus tard, Associated Press, flairant l’erreur pontificale, lance l’alerte : les propos ne sont pas ceux d’Angela Merkel, mais du chef de l’Etat russe Vladimir Poutine, qui les a prononcés le 20 août dernier.

On imagine le sourire du maître du Kremlin recevant l’imprimatur involontaire du pontife romain !

La communication du Vatican, comme d’autres services pontificaux d’ailleurs, semble souffrir d’une certaine désorientation due à l’épais brouillard qui stagne au-dessus de la muraille léonine depuis plusieurs années. Certains se prennent à espérer, dans la Cité léonine, de voir bientôt un conclave.

« Rien sur le plan scientifique ne justifie la vaccination des adolescents », écrivait le virologue Jean-Michel Claverie dans Les Echos du 18 juin 2021.

Il défend l’immunité naturelle et le retour à la normale pour la jeune population qui ne décède pas du Covid-19. Force est de constater que le Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) donne raison au professeur.

Ce grand virologue français Jean–Michel Claverie, reconnu internationalement, se demande bien dans quel monde nous vivons. Sur son compte Linkedin, il publie les chiffres du Centre pour le Contrôle et la Prévention des Maladies (CDC) – qui est l’agence fédérale des États-Unis en matière de protection de la santé publique – des cas de myocardites chez les jeunes. Des chiffres qui font froid dans le dos. Pour les 12-15 ans (mâles), plus de 2 240% (23 fois plus) de myocardites, les 16-17 ans (mâles) : + 3 933% (40 fois plus), les 18-24 ans (mâles) : +1 836 % et les 25-29 ans (mâles) : +522 %.

Après la vaccination – les mots ne sont pas assez forts – c’est l’hécatombe. Pour le Pr Claverie, le constat est sans appel : « Il faut vraiment arrêter ce délire ! »

Les chefs religieux vendent le troupeau au 666

Dimanche dernier, une voisine me raconte, catastrophée : « Ma fille, qui a 14 ans, est dans une institution privée. Le jour de la rentrée, la prof principale s’est permise de demander aux élèves s’ils étaient vaccinés contre le Covid, sous prétexte qu’il y aura un pèlerinage à Lourdes, qui sera leur unique sortie scolaire de l’année ». Cette voisine n’est pas croyante, mais, en tant qu’ancienne infirmière, elle se méfie des vaccins et elle veut protéger la fertilité de sa fille, ce qui est bien légitime. Or c’est par la main des structures religieuses que se profile dans sa vie le spectre de la violation du secret médical et des menaces de discrimination contre sa fille. Notre Dame de Lourdes n’en est sûrement pas fière… Et l’on ne compte plus les prêtres qui dans leurs homélies se permettent de se moquer ouvertement des manifestants anti-passe.

Le pape présente la vaccination comme un « acte d’amour » et l’Eglise catholique l’impose dans certains séminaires, malgré la présence de répliques de cellules de foetus dans les vaccins. Aux Etats-Unis avant-hier Yahoo faisait le constat qu’ « aucune grande religion organisée ne s’oppose aux vaccins, et les dirigeants catholiques romains et autres dirigeants chrétiens, juifs et musulmans ont conseillé à leurs fidèles de se faire vacciner », ce qui pourrait justifier que la clause d’exemption religieuse ne puisse plus justifier le refus de se faire vacciner.

Dans ce contexte, les amateurs de peopleries ne s’étonneront pas d’apprendre que l’icône « pop » du catholicisme 666, Katy Perry, chanteuse adepte de l’oeil d’Horus qui spolie les nonnes avec l’aval du pape, et a ses entrées au Vatican, a signé, aux côtés de la sataniste Billie Eilish (voyez le décodage de son clip « Good Girls Go To Hell » ou de « Bury a friend« ), en juin une lettre ouverte de l’UNICEF (dont on a vu les belles pubs en Norvège) qui exhorte les pays du Groupe des Sept (G7) à faire don de vaccins contre le coronavirus à l’initiative mondiale d’équité en matière de vaccins COVAX. Dans ce marécage sulfureux, le leader nord-coréen Kim Jong-Un qui vient de refuser un don chinois de 3 millions de vaccins Sinovac, après avoir décliné en juin l’offre sud-coréenne de 2 millions de doses d’AstraZeneca, ferait presque figure de parangon de vertu…

Le soufre n’atteint évidemment pas seulement les milieux religieux en ce moment. Aussi, les militants anti-pass laïques devraient-ils se méfier un peu plus de l’ambiance culturelles et spirituelles dans laquelle ils font baigner leur action. Dans cette vidéo d’une manifestation anti-pass sanitaire du 4 septembre 2021 à Paris, en minute 1’36 on voit un politicien s’exprimer sur fond d’une musique de Laurent Voulzy, qui insère à un moment un refrain des Rolling Stones (qui fêteront l’an prochain leurs 60 ans) – ceux qui ne voient pas le problème que cela pose dans l’ordre spirituel peuvent se reporter à ce petit topo de 4 minutes sur le sujet.

La grande presse a annoncé il y a 2 semaines la mort du batteur de ce groupe. Il s’était joint en 1962 à Mick Jagger, dont les affinités satanistes étaient connues, ainsi que Keith Richards, bras droit de Kenneth Anger, le co-fonfateur de l’Eglise de Satan (cité dans “Rolling Stones in their own words” de David Dalton et M. Farren, 1983). Inutile de détailler les éléments obscurs de cette vieille saga (par exemple leur installation dans un ancien siège de la Gestapo sur la Côte d’Azur). Rappelons seulement que Mick Jagger a sorti au printemps dernier une chanson « Easy sleazy » pour se moquer des anti-vaccins.

Il convient donc de garder un bon fossé de distance entre cette matrice culturelle et nous.

Depuis plusieurs années, nous sentions bien que plusieurs choses clochaient dans ce monde.
Pris par la vie de tous les jours avec ce sentiment confus d’un « quelque chose » qui n’allait pas, nous errions sans vraiment comprendre, nous raccrochant à ce monde vicié pour éviter la douleur de s’en détacher.

Heureusement, le virus et son narratif burlesque envahissant la surface du globe est arrivé, nous arrachant nos œillères, nous laissant contempler le désastre.

D’abord, nous avons essayé de comprendre.
Je peux vous le dire, nous n’avons jamais autant travaillé. Et je vais vous faire mal : nous sommes tous bénévoles ! Nous avons épluché tous les articles de sciences, toutes les informations, lois, décrets, ordonnances.

Nous avons lu toutes les informations, celles des médias mainstream comme celles des « complotistes ».
Nous avons appris à maîtriser Internet, les réseaux sociaux, la communication, le graphisme, la communication non violente…
Nous avons écrit, filmé, publié, coordonné, dessiné, chanté, dansé créé des œuvres d’art. Nous nous levons aux aurores et nous couchons lorsque nos yeux se ferment.

Vous vouliez nous appauvrir, vous nous avez tant enrichis : nos connaissances sont plus grandes, nous nous sommes découverts de nouveaux talents. Nous avons repoussé nos limites : plus que jamais nous sommes emplis d’espoir, de courage et d’allégresse.

Vous vouliez notre mort mais nous nous sentons plus vivants et rayonnants que jamais.

Vous vouliez nous désespérer, nous n’avons plus besoin d’espoir pour entreprendre.

Grâce à vous, nous avons pu cerner ce que nous ne voulions pas.

Nous ne voulons pas vivre masqués.
Nous ne voulons pas vivre en nous méfiant les uns des autres.

Nous ne voulons pas de passeport sanitaire, de reconnaissance faciale, nous ne voulons pas vivre fichés.
Nous ne voulons pas être incarcérés dans nos domiciles.

Vous vouliez nous séparer. Vous nous avez rassemblés.

Vous vouliez nous faire peur, nous sommes sortis de la caverne. Jouez tous seuls avec vos ombres.

Vous vouliez nous abrutir devant la télévision, nous l’avons éteinte et demain nous jetterons devant nos seuils tous vos biens de consommation à l’obsolescence programmée.

Vous vouliez nous imposer le passeport sanitaire, nous surveiller, nous reconnaître facialement, nous pucer peut-être ? Nous avons faim de liberté.

Vous vouliez nous vendre des médicaments couteux à l’efficacité et à la sécurité douteuse ? Nous arpentons d’autres chemins de santé.

Vous vouliez nous imposer votre vision du monde, marchande et basée sur la dette éternelle, la dépossession intégrale, jusqu’à celle de nos propres vies ?

Quelle belle rencontre avec Louis Fouché et son épouse Carole, début août chez eux, à Marseille ! Louis, médecin anesthésiste, est le porte-parole de Reinfo Covid qu’il a initié au début de la crise sanitaire. Depuis, des centaines de milliers de gens, médecins, infirmières, enseignants, mamans et papas, trouvent des réponses à leurs questions, et des centaines de groupes régionaux se sont formés partout en France, mais aussi en Suisse, en Israël, en Turquie et j’en passe. The five key events in the fake pandemic

This article is a summary. I’ve written extensively on each of the five key events. ONE: The false claim that a new virus was discovered and isolated. No true isolation has been performed. The so-called genetic sequencing of the virus was actually a concoction, a cobbling together of pieces of data referencing segments of RNA. These segments were PRESUMED to be parts of a new virus—but researchers didn’t have the virus, so their presumptions amounted to fraud. TWO: The erecting of a diagnostic test (PCR) for the virus they didn’t have. Obviously, no such test has meaning. It is built on the same sorts of absurd assumptions that led to the fictional “discovery” of the virus. However, strategically speaking, the test has produced millions of “positive results,” which are taken to mean “infected by the virus.” On this foundation of sand, the lockdowns were declared. THREE: The Chinese lockdown of 50 million citizens, for no medical reason. This unprecedented event provided the model for other governments, and for the CDC and the World Health Organization. Now it was “acceptable” to imprison the global population and wreak economic devastation across the planet. FOUR: The absurd computer prediction of 500,000 deaths in the UK and two million in the US by the summer of 2020, made by historically failed modeler, Neil Ferguson. His institute at the Imperial College of London is bankrolled by Bill Gates. Ferguson’s predictions were used to convince Trump and Boris Johnson that states of emergency and lockdowns were necessary. FIVE: The forced premature deaths of millions of elderly people across the world—which were falsely called “COVID-19 deaths.” These people were and are suffering from multiple long-term health conditions, made far worse by decades of medical treatment with toxic drugs. Terrified by a COVID diagnosis, then isolated from family and friends, treated with more toxic debilitating drugs, remdesivir and Midazolam (Versed), they give up and die. There are other important events, to be sure, but these are the key five. The underlying fact that needs to be understood: what is called COVID-19 is not one condition. It is a variety of illnesses and effects stemming from different traditional causes RE-PACKAGED under the label, “COVID.” Where authentic new conditions and causes may be involved, independent investigators need to look closely at such clusters of people, where they live. For example, the investigators should find out whether toxic vaccine campaigns were initiated in a community or region prior to declaration of the “COVID outbreak.” ~~~ Here is a short piece of fiction I wrote early on during the “pandemic.” It paints a far different picture of COVID events. At that time, I hoped business leaders would squash the insane lockdowns and economic devastation. That never happened. Instead, these high-powered leaders gladly caved in and took their turn at the bailout trough. Coronavirus and Island X-24 There was a small island. Amazingly, it had never been claimed by any country. It just sat there. It was inconsequential. Geographers were irritated that it had no name. In 1998, they named it X-24. 123 families lived there. They emigrated from 14 countries. During the 2019 onset of the trouble in China, 19 citizens had escaped the lockdown in Wuhan and found their way to the island in a small makeshift boat, which broke into pieces near shore. The resident families welcomed them without fanfare, and offered them housing in huts on the north side of the island. People on the island practiced agriculture on their tiny farms, and they raised chickens and ate eggs. There was no government. The families met once a month to discuss any issues that might have arisen since their last meeting. They did not vote. They used common sense. They were sensible people. They had no ideology. They had no phones, no computers, no electricity. One of the newly arrived Chinese women explained, at a meeting, the coronavirus, the epidemic, the lockdown, the testing. She asked whether anyone was concerned that her people might have brought the virus with them. The people of the island looked around at each other and shrugged. They didn’t seem interested. Three weeks later, an article appeared in the mainland Chinese press about X-24 and the 19 escaped Wuhan residents. It was picked up by a wire service and then republished by a number of outlets around the world. It did not become a big story. However, a boat soon arrived at the island. A Chinese official and an American public health officer from the CDC stepped off. Several conversations ensued. The two bureaucrats were concerned that the virus might have come to X-24. The residents said they didn’t travel, and they didn’t even fish. Why not? No one had an answer. The bureaucrats took samples of rainwater from a backyard container. They took a look at all the X-24 residents and saw they were healthy. They took throat swabs from the new 19 Chinese residents. There was a bit of tension when the Chinese official told these Wuhan escapees they were living illegally on the island and should return home. The Chinese residents said they wouldn’t, but they had no intention of causing trouble. The visitors left. A week later, at a meeting in government offices in Wuhan, CDC and Chinese scientists told a deputy mayor of the city that nine immigrants on X-24 had tested positive for the coronavirus. A call was immediately made to the public health and safety office of the national government, and the news was reported. Two hours later, a message came back: leave the people on X-24 alone for now. The government in Beijing took up the X-24 issue in several committees. A decision was made. Drones would do high flyovers and surveil the island. No one would be permitted to leave it. Three months later, with the world in lockdown, a small elite government committee met in Beijing. The news: all the residents of X-24 were going about their daily business. No sick people were observed, even among the elderly. No one had tried to leave the island. No one was practicing social distancing. People met and mingled as usual. A CDC/WHO message was read: It expressed concern about X-24. People who were positive for the virus couldn’t be allowed to live outside the limits of control. Something needed to be done. Three weeks later, X-24 residents observed a group of armed boats approaching. Maneuvers were executed, and the craft made a ring around the island. They sat about 20 miles offshore. They stayed there. This operation was noticed by the press. The X-24 story made a brief limited comeback. INFECTED PEOPLE LIVING ON AN ISLAND. QUARANTINE FORCED. A few reporters tried to get information on the condition of the X-24 residents. They couldn’t. CDC meetings took place. The gist was: These people remain healthy. There is no sign of trouble. No disease. No illness. “What happens if THIS becomes a story?” The issue was kicked up to the Chinese and American military. Very private meetings took place. “We could launch a drone missile attack and wipe them out.” “We could send in a kill-team.” “How about a massive fire? Drop a few incendiaries.” “Spray them with nasty chemicals. They’ll have a hell of time trying to breathe, they’ll foam at the mouth and die.” But in the end, the military held back. A message from a carefully guarded private source came down the line: “Leave them alone. Remove the stupid ships. Observe from drones. Do not attack. They rate as experimental subjects. They constitute a control group. By CDC projections, at least a few of them should become ill. So far, that’s not the case.” …A year later, on X-24, the Chinese woman, who had originally told the island residents about the coronavirus, wrote in the diary she had been keeping, “The mainland madness is just a faint memory. My mother here is 93. She is reasonably healthy. A few people get sick, as a matter of course, and then they get well. Nothing unusual. There were two deaths last year. A French woman and an American man. They were both in their 80s. I helped their families make them comfortable. I saw no sudden illness of the lungs. I liked all these island people from the start. I feel close to them now.” Old habits die hard. She looked around her small cabin, as if some government authority might be present. She walked to the pile of stones arranged in the corner, where a low fire was burning. It occurred to her there was no reason to continue her diary. She bent down and placed it in the flames and watched it for a minute. The past was past. Nothing untoward had happened on the island. Back at the CDC, a private analysis was carried out. Nine mitigating factors were listed to explain why no one on the island had fallen ill from the virus. The conclusion was the island was not a proper representation of the real world. The analysis was sent up the line to the guarded source who had ordered the ring of ships to back off. He read the CDC analysis. He sent back a message. “I wasn’t asking you to cover your ass or justify your role in this fiasco. Your so-called mitigating factors are a crock. Apparently, you’re unable to be honest. So let me send you my analysis. The people on X-24 didn’t get sick because they didn’t get sick. Remove promoted fear, diagnostic tests, treatment with toxic drugs, and other damage falsely labeled as COVID, and you have nothing. I see why you were disturbed about the story of X-24. But then, accounting for healthy people who stay healthy has never been your strong suit, has it? You’ve gone too far. I should set my hounds loose on you.” A colleague of his walked into the steam room, picked up a pitcher of cold water and poured it on the rocks. Steam rose and the rocks hissed. Wrapped in white sheets, the two men sat side by side. “Did you tear them a new one?” “I gave them something to think about. These people are incorrigible. They really are.” “When our friends arrive tonight, we’ll discuss the situation.” “Yes. Recess is over. The bureaucrats interrupted business. Products must flow. Money must flow. They don’t understand we’re the engine of the world, for better or worse.” “We’ll school these little bureaucrats. They parade around thinking they’re princes. They’re going to pay.” The steam spread. The men were invisible.

The Pope’s Blast from the Past

The latest blast from Rome about the Tridentine Mass has roused all sorts of justified reactions. Many bishops—ranging from those concerned about souls to those worried about finances—have found various ways of ignoring it or setting it aside—at least for the moment. The more legal-minded have looked at different aspects, ranging from whether or not it is ultra vires in the light of Quo Primum to whether, as it does not exist in Latin, it has any legal force at all. Those more concerned with content have looked into its shrill tone, self-contradictions, and—shall we say—factual lapses.

For many non-Traditionalist Catholics, it seems to tear a mask of accompanying humility off the Holy Father to reveal a bullying, vindictive countenance underneath. Others wonder how a pope can violently contradict his predecessor on every point—even while that predecessor is still alive. While understanding and to some degree sharing all of these reactions, this writer must admit another—weirdly similar to that he felt toward the other great catastrophe of the past few weeks, the fall of Kabul: a painful feeling of mal-nostalgia. Even as the collapse of our client state in Afghanistan has brought back to me flashbacks of the fall of Saigon during my freshman year in High School, so too with this papal decree.

From as far back as I can remember, St. Paul VI and his allies had been changing things in the name of Vatican II. These were usually enforced in most parishes by a young “Vatican II priest,” who overruled whatever objections that pastor might have had, systematically terrorized pious little old ladies who quaveringly questioned what was going on, and whose inane and often false explanations were enforced with brute power.

Rather than rehearse the whole sorry tale of the stages whereby these clerical hatchet men accomplished their goals, let it be said that by 1976, in America at least, in most places the Mass was a feeble shadow of itself, Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction had been banished, and the Catholic school system had become a reliable method of robbing children of their Faith (and so defrauding their parents of their tuition money). In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, this dreary pattern was the order of the day. The only Latin Masses in the area were being said in semi-secret by the redoubtable Fr. Schell at various hotels in the San Fernando Valley. The most popular processional hymn was “Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man,” and the soul-killing Christ Among Us was the catechetical book of choice for High School students. 

I, however, was very fortunate. My parents were both devout and well-educated in their Faith and much else besides; my father, in addition, was French-Canadian, with the integral Catholicism that characterized our people before the Quiet Revolution destroyed us. He would read the various religion books handed to my brother and me during our education and correct their many errors. 

By sheer accident, James Francis Cardinal McIntyre became my confessor; he introduced me to Dom Marmion, Thomas à Kempis, and many other Catholic literary giants. My Catholic high school had not yet purged its library shelves of Belloc, Chesterton, Attwater, and a host of others whom I discovered. Thanks to the Cardinal’s recommendation, I met the Anglo-Catholics of St. Mary of the Angels, Hollywood, who were part of the tiny seed from which the Anglican Ordinariate would eventually bloom.  Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

They, in turn, introduced me to the late Fr. Feodor Wilcock, SJ, and the church of which he was pastor, St. Andrew’s Russian Catholic Church in El Segundo. When I went to college in 1978, the Catholic Chaplain at New Mexico Military Institute, Fr. Kevin Moynahan, reinforced all of that. Having been an armor officer in World War II and then a Trappist monk, he went into the diocesan priesthood when his order abandoned silence. All of these influences conspired to keep me Catholic at a time when the Traditional Faith was virtually underground. 

It did not stay that way. Slowly, gradually, it broke back above the surface. John Paul II popularized Eucharistic and a host of other devotions (such as the Rosary) that had been dismissed as passé, as well as canonizing and beatifying a host of important holy personages. The increasing growth of the Society of St. Pius X spurred first the Indult and then Ecclesia Dei—which in turn led to an explosion of traditional orders and communities. 

Benedict XVI recognized both the inherent good of the Church’s traditional liturgy and the evil and illegal manner in which it had been suppressed. His diplomatic way of attempting to right the wrong without exposing the perpetrators of said injustice was, of course, Summorum Pontificum—an act which perfectly complemented his moves in establishing the Anglican Ordinariates, increasing the independence and prestige of the Eastern Catholic Churches, and making fresh overtures to the Orthodox. At his inaugural Mass, he had bidden us to “pray, that I do not flee for fear of the wolves,” a phrase that haunted me throughout his pontificate. When he left the Chair of St. Peter, it was the first thing that came to mind; although I do not pretend to know why he did it. But all through his reign and that of his predecessor, the “Vatican II priests”—at least those who did not leave the priesthood or had not been convicted of sexual and other crimes—had waited. Now old and in positions of power, it was perhaps inevitable that if one of their own was elected pope, they would try to turn the clock back to the days of their power-mad youth.

So, it seems to me, they are doing. But this is 2021, not 1969. Their far-wiser mentors are long gone, and they are left with nothing but the appearance of power. Authority in the Church is given by God for the Salvation of Souls, not for submitting to the Spirit of this World of Darkness. Church history teaches us that prelates of whatever rank who misuse their power fail in the end. It was true for Honorius, for Benedict IX, and for Julius III; and it is true now. Things shall right themselves eventually—but woe to those who put them out of joint. They shall be responsible for all souls lost during their stewardship—and, as many a holy writer assures us, no one goes to Hell alone.
