This member update contains very important housekeeping information, information on our fantastic upcoming Matthew Bulfin Educational Conference, and information on the rapidly expanding opportunities for us to speak out, opened by the New York and Virginia abortion laws.

1.  Very Important Housekeeping Information

Yes, it’s that time of year again.  Even I got a dues reminder!  AAPLOG’s membership cycle starts with the beginning of each year. So anyone who pays dues after Jan 1 2019 will be paid up for 2019. But we hope that dues will be paid by March 1 for the year.

Many of you, like myself, are on a recurrent payment plan, which means that our credit card will automatically be charged March 1 of each year.  And, all of us who haven’t paid yet get our friendly system generated reminder, regardless of our payment method.

How do I know if I have a recurrent dues payment plan?   Easy.  Log into the members website and click on your name.  All of your account information is there.  If you are on a recurrent payment plan, then you will see this information below, with a big black box that says « Stop Recurring Payments ».  That means you have recurrent payments activated.

 See screenshot below for example:

____________.

If you don’t want recurring payments, it’s easy to change:

If someone would like to stop their recurring payments, they just log into the member website, click their name at the top right corner to view their profile and then click the STOP RECURRING PAYMENTS button in the middle of the page.

I want to set up recurrent dues payments…How do I do it?

Easy. Log into the member website,  then just click the button that says Renew to Sunday, March 1, 2020 and then pay with your credit card.

I want to set up a recurrent monthly donation plan…How do I do it?

Easy.  Just click here and select the amount and how often you would like to donate. Then click the donate button and follow the instructions on the page.

2.  The 2019 Matthew Bulfin Educational Conference is just around the corner  April 5-7.  Terrific speakers, great fellowship and CME to boot!   Register now!

If you can’t attend, tell a student or resident about the conference.  And tell them to sign up for the Joe DeCook Scholarship (which covers transportation, hotel and conference costs)  and the Honeycutt Scientific Poster presentation. See links at the bottom of the Conference Page

Also check out the FACTS seminar, which takes place immediately before the 2019 MBEC.  Do them both!

3.  How New York and Virginia have opened the national discussion on abortion, and what opportunities exist now for your voice to be heard.

The recent NY Reproductive Health Act signed into law on Jan 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, not only codifies Roe and Doe into state law in New York, but also importantly repeals the law in New York which requires resuscitation of living children born after a failed abortion.  This repeal of requirements to resuscitate newborns is perhaps the most hideous aspect of this law.    Read more

By removing legal protection from the survivors of abortion, New York effectively legalized infanticide for the babies who survive abortion.

Similarly, the Virginia bill also would allow for infanticide as was made clear by Comments by Governor Northrup

« …Appearing to discuss what would happen if a child was born after a failed attempt at abortion, he said, “the infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.

This move to not only enshrine Roe and Doe in state law, but also to allow infanticide for those infants who survive has caused the US Senate to propose the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act  S 311.

In support of the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act S. 311,  AAPLOG has joined with the American College of Pediatricians, the Christian Medical & Dental Association, the Catholic Medical Association and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons to send a joint letter to Congress, clarifying the facts surrounding late term abortions, and citing the need to defend the babies born after abortion from being killed.

Joint letter from AAPLOG, American College of Pediatricians, Christian Medical and Dental Association and the Catholic Medical Association.

Please can you write an op ed?

We are looking for AAPLOG members in the states of AK, AL, CO, WV, WI, an MT to write an op ed for their local paper, and to contact their senators and  representatives to support S311.  Please feel free to use the points that are made in this joint letter.  AK, AL, MT and WI are most important. Please email me if you have any questions.  (donna@aaplog.org)

Also, please send me a copy of your letter to share with the membership of AAPLOG, for our mutual encouragement.  (donna@aaplog.org)

4. Dismemberment Bans  another opportunity to defend life in your state.

States across the country are introducing bans on dismemberment abortions. You may be called upon in your state to testify.  AAPLOG has produced some important resources for your testimony, including an example of testimony submitted in Maryland last year on behalf of a dismemberment ban.  You are free to use these documents as needed to support your work in your state.

AAPLOG Practice Bulletins

AAPLOG Practice Bulletin 1 Perinatal Hospice

AAPLOG Practice Bulletin 2 Fetal Pain PB 2

AAPLOG Practice Bulletin 3  Previable Induction of Labor

AAPLOG Statements

Fetal Pain Fact Sheet

Viable Fetal Protection Laws

Statement on Post Viability Abortion Bans

Statement on D&E Bans

Also find AAPLOG testimony on these bans from 2018 in Maryland. (written testimony 20 week ban,  written testimony D&E ban)  These are just examples to help you write your own testimony.

Res Ipsa Loquitur (the thing speaks for itself)

Dr. Anthony Levatino, AAPLOG board member, in conjunction with Live Action,  produced a set of brief videos which clearly and succinctly summarize the various abortion procedures.

When the D&E video was shown during the Maryland testimony, the opposition was speechless.  These are a very effective tool and we should use them at every educational opportunity.

In addition to the Levatino videos, these graphics are useful for testimony:

What is a Dismemberment Abortion?

What is a Partial Birth Abortion?

What is a Saline Instillation Abortion?
